Tonight will be our last week with Liz Curtis Higgs and her book Bad Girls of the Bible: And What We Can Learn from Them. Please read chapter 10 on “The Sinful Woman” and read Luke 7:36-50.
Luke places the story of the Sinful Woman immediately after Jesus responds to the inquiries of the disciples of John the Baptist. Luke 7:18-35. These disciples come to Jesus and ask “Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?” v.19. Luke’s placement of the story of the Sinful Woman serves to give us a living example of who the Messiah is. The story also tells us who we are within his presence. If we are to call ourselves “Christian” we must necessarily see the Sinful Women as representative of us all. Luke lays out for us two paths – the path of the well-known and very righteous Simon the Pharisee or the unknown sinful woman. And it is the latter path we must take if we are to follow Jesus.

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.
