Hebrews 1-2, pt.2

This evening we are gathering to begin our discussion of the Letter to the Hebrews.  Fr. Gabriel will be teaching on Hebrews 1-2.  Please bring your Bibles with you tonight and please take the opportunity to read through these first two chapters.  If you have the opportunity today, I have also attached the relevant excerpts from William Barclay’s Commentary on Hebrews. Barclay has a good introduction exploring the origins and authorship of the letter. For Barclay, the great theme of the letter is how we access God, and how the barriers are removed and the doors opened through Christ so that we may forever dwell in God’s presence.

SCHEDULING –

During Advent this year, we will be reading Martin Luther’s Christmas Book which is a series of excerpts from his Advent and Christmas sermons wherein Luther describes the very human realism of the Christmas story from the Annunciation to the Presentation.  For Epiphany, we will use Luke Timothy Johnson’s book The Creed: What Christians Believe and Why it Matters. Johnson will walk us through the importance of the Nicene Creed and what it means to us today.  In Lent, we will read through C. S. Lewis’s book The Great Divorce where Lewis explores the nature of sin, hell, and death, and what it means to be fully human.  If you need any of the books, please let me know, or you can ask Santa.

Dinner is a 6. The menu is roast pork with an assortment of seasonal vegetables. Teaching about 6:45. Hope to see you here. Please bring a friend.

What is man that you should be mindful of him? *
     the son of man that you should seek him out?
You have made him but little lower than the angels; *
     you adorn him with glory and honor;
You give him mastery over the works of your hands; *
     you put all things under his feet:

Psalm 8:5-7
