This evening we are gathering to discuss Chapter 2 “We are Something Greater than Ourselves” and Chapter 3 “Following Jesus with Our Feet” of Bishop Curry’s book Crazy Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus. In chapter 3, Curry points out that discipleship is more than simply following Jesus with your feet but is intrinsically holistic. Our calling isn’t simply to follow the rules either by obeying a moral code or engaging in certain social action. Rather, to be a disciple is to become like Jesus. Not only with our hearts and our minds but in our very being. Or as the Patristic writers would say: God became man so that we may be become God and be partakers of his divine nature. 2 Peter 1:4. Or as Thomas á Kempis writes, we are to be Imitators of Christ. Discipleship is about becoming one with the one we follow. And in becoming like Jesus, that other issues of which Curry speaks, fall into place.
Dinner is at 6. The menu is Brunswick Stew. Discussion about 6:45. Hope to see you here.
And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.”
