Next Tuesday we are going to look at Melchizedek. He is the “king of Salem” and blesses Abram after his victory in battle. Melchizedek only makes this one appearance throughout the Abrahamic narrative, but he will appear again in Psalm 110, Jewish apocalyptic literature, and in the Letter to the Hebrews. In preparation for Tuesday, please read Genesis 14, Psalm 110, Hebrews 7, and the “Coming of Melchizedek” which is attached. As you read through these passages, keep in mind that “Melchizedek” is simply a compound word from the Hebrew “melekh” meaning “king” and “zedek” meaning “righteous” or “perfect”. Therefore “Melchizedek” may simply be a title, and not necessarily a proper name. The readings should take about an hour, which is all Jesus asks of you (Matt 26:40).
Tonight is smells-and-bells vespers service at St. Nicholas’ at 6 p.m. located at 404 Maple St.
