Please remember that this Tuesday we will begin our discussion of Abraham. Please try to read the attached readings before Tuesday evening. (If you don’t, please come anyway!) It is through these stories that I want us to develop a deeper and broader understanding of how to read Scripture. The menu for Tuesday night is pizza. Dinner is at 6, Discussion around 6:30, Compline at 7:55. If you have any specific prayers or thanksgivings to include in Compline, please let me know.
This Wednesday, August 21, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church is beginning a weekly Vespers service. For those of us that need a mid-week service, this is a great opportunity, and you don’t have to be “Orthodox” to attend. This service is very similar to the Evening Prayer or Compline service in the BCP. It’s about a 45 minute prayer service – no sermon and no sacrament – and consists of the chanting of several psalms, the praying of litanies (similar to the BCP’s prayers of the people), the praying of collects, and the singing of ancient hymns such as the Song of Simeon. Excluding Holy Week, this is one of the best services I have ever attended. It provides that perfect setting to simply be in the presence of God and to be able to listen to his still small voice within the quiet and contemplation of the service. The service starts at 6, and the church is located at 404 Maple Street at the intersection of 4th Ave. and Maple one block off of Broadway.
Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
