Tonight we are having our follow-up discussions of Tim Sorens’s book, Everywhere You Look: Discovering the Church Right Where You Are.
Mission:
One of the themes of Sorens’s book is that God is not waiting on us to do anything. Rather, the Spirit is active in our community right now. We must simply open our minds and open our eyes as to where and how the Spirit moving and to join in. When we join the Spirit’s movement we probably will be partnering with others who are not members of our particular congregation and who may not even be Christian.
For this week’s lesson, we are going to share our own personal experiences and insight into how and where the Spirit is moving in Myrtle Beach. I want us to share the opportunities that we have to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. Where are you serving or where do you see the opportunity to serve?
Members:
I also want us to share where and how we provide an alternative community to what the world offers. In the West, we are surrounded by a culture of consumerism and anti-neighborly individualism, and the question is how can we recover the church described in Acts? How can we, as a Christian community, provide our secular community with a living and working example of the Kingdom of Heaven right now and right here? How do we demonstrate Christ in Myrtle Beach?
SCHEDULE: Next week is a Halloween gathering, with no lesson. Beginning in November we will be studying the prophet Elijah. Elijah provides us, as the church, with a template of how to be an alternative community and how we look forward to the advent of the Messiah.
Dinner is at 6. The menu is beef stew. Discussion about 6:45. Compline at 8. Hope to see you here.
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.’
