Please remember that we are NOT gathering this evening. We will pick back up with our Marian discussion next week.
One of the more fascinating issues in studying Mary is her place in Islam. Mary is mentioned by name more times in the Quran than in the Bible and she is the only woman mentioned by name in the Quran. The Quran is divided into 114 “Surahs” or chapters. Surah 3 – The Family of Imran is dedicated to Mary’s father, Imran, and speaks of Jesus’ divine conception. Surah 19 – Mary is dedicated to Mary herself and speaks of the birth of Jesus. Attached are the excerpts from these chapters where Mary is mentioned (3:19-51, 19:16-33). Please take a few minutes this week to read through these excerpts and think through how the Quran can help us obtain a deeper understanding of who Mary is.
“(And mention) when the angels said, ‘O Mary, indeed God gives you the good news of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and in the Hereafter, and of those who are near to God. He will speak to the people in the cradle, and in old age, and he will be of the righteous.’”
Surah 3:45-46
